Planning a beach outing? Rather than spending the day eating takeout and junk from convenience stores, check out a few ideas for healthy beach snacks. Nosh on such snacks in between splashing around in the ocean, going for a run, playing beach volleyball or otherwise lounging and enjoying the salt air.
Throw a few yogurt packs in your freezer, then add them to your beach cooler. While they won’t stay frozen all day, they will still remain cool, and make an excellent alternative to purchasing ice cream cones.
Forget about potato chips and similar snacks, and instead make your own trail mix! Add items such as granola, almonds, walnuts, pecans, peanuts, cashews, dried fruit and pretzel rounds to make a yummy and hearty snack. Another alternative to potato chips is super-crispy kale chips.
Roasted Chickpeas and Edamame
Roasted chickpeas or roasted edamame (soybeans) are a great way to get some protein and fiber, and are super-duper crunchy. Keep them separate or mix them together. You can also opt to add black sesame seeds to the latter.
Watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe chunks make a yummy, water-filled summer fruit salad. The extra water is also ideal if you’re playing beach sports and sweating a lot. Just being out in the sun all day is also dehydrating!
Rather than packing sandwiches in a cooler, which can get soggy, bring half a loaf of whole wheat bread, such as French bread, along with some cheese, a spread if desired, and tomato slices. Use a plastic knife to add the spread and cheese to the bread and top with tomato for a yummy snack.
Add one or a few varieties of hummus to your cooler along with some pita bread and other whole wheat crackers for dipping. You can also opt to make your own hummus!
If you still want some chocolate while sitting on the beach, go for dark chocolate, which is packed with antioxidants and will still satisfy that sweet craving.
